An early-career recurring summer job with an orthopedic surgeon led Dr. Totah to the epiphany that he wants to cultivate a healthy personal life in addition to his professional one. To him, a good work-life balance defined success. Dr. Totah wanted a successful personal life. He is the proud father of three children who are all getting ready to graduate from college, nursing or pharmacy school this year.

Deemed by students as the “best trip ever,” what makes the experience so valuable is the opportunity to bridge the gap between classroom lessons to career exposure and real-life scenarios. “In class we have studied how bacteria develop antibiotic resistance and how antibiotics work, but at Vertex we learned specifically that bacteria have enzymes that break down B-lactam antibiotics,” one student noted.

This collaborative marks the first of its kind to bring together people who serve business in the Southern Border Region, which includes San Diego County and Imperial County.
