An early-career recurring summer job with an orthopedic surgeon led Dr. Totah to the epiphany that he wants to cultivate a healthy personal life in addition to his professional one. To him, a good work-life balance defined success. Dr. Totah wanted a successful personal life. He is the proud father of three children who are all getting ready to graduate from college, nursing or pharmacy school this year.

Deemed by students as the “best trip ever,” what makes the experience so valuable is the opportunity to bridge the gap between classroom lessons to career exposure and real-life scenarios. “In class we have studied how bacteria develop antibiotic resistance and how antibiotics work, but at Vertex we learned specifically that bacteria have enzymes that break down B-lactam antibiotics,” one student noted.

SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego has been chosen as one of eight U.S. communities to receive customized technical assistance to advance its skilled immigrant integration efforts. The San Diego Workforce Partnership, as a partner of Welcoming San Diego, was selected for the program.

Since the start of this initiative on October 5, 2018, we have had 92 referrals from five partners, including the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC), South Bay Community Services, PATH (People Assisting the Homeless), Home Start, Father Joe’s Villages and new partner YWCA of San Diego County.

The Life Sciences Summer Institute (LSSI) nourishes a passion for science and math in San Diego’s next generation of scientists through high school internships at leading life sciences companies. LSSI participant Michelle Fox sat down with San Diego Workforce Partnership Business Program Specialist Penelope Oseguera to talk about her internship at the Su Lab.

January 29 marked the launch of a regional Business Services Collaborative convened by the San Diego Workforce Partnership. This collaborative marks the first of its kind to bring together people who serve business in the Southern Border Region, which includes San Diego County and Imperial County. The group welcomes all business services representatives, consultants, job developers, managers, and the like, from any program or organization across the region who are interested in participating.

You researched, networked, sent countless resumes out and attended numerous interviews—all of which have tested your patience and emotions. Quite simply, you worked hard to land the job of your dreams. Now it’s your first day on the job and you’re feeling overwhelmed, unsure and a bit worried about meeting all the expectations of the employer.

During the government shutdown, the career centers will remain open—as will all services provided by the Workforce Partnership. Funding for these centers is yet unaffected by the shutdown.

As part of the OpportunitySD initiative focused on lowering youth disconnection rates in the region, the San Diego Workforce Partnership has hired ten young adults to share their experience and voice to raise the profile of youth issues in San Diego.
