City Heights Coffee House offers holistic training beyond essential skills

To hear Sterling Tran tell it, City Heights Coffee House (CHCH) was in the cards for her since childhood. A social enterprise nonprofit that started in an alley off El Cajon Boulevard in 2016, the coffee house recently moved to its new brick and mortar home at 4465 University Avenue. Its mission is to help people become self-sufficient and to be the “central, multicultural gathering hub for our City Heights community.”
New program aims to improve health care by supporting small business

The San Diego Workforce Partnership (SDWP) is currently helping Kaiser Permanente and the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) to spearhead a program called the Inner City Capital Connections (ICCC). The program strives to help small businesses in economically distressed areas build capacity for sustainable growth in revenue, profitability and employment.

Last year, the San Diego Workforce Partnership (SDWP) launched OpportunitySD, a movement to dramatically reduce the number of opportunity youth (young adults ages 16-24 who are neither in school nor working) in the region. In March of this year, SDWP’s opportunity youth research with Measure of America revealed that San Diego County had the largest Black-White disconnection disparity of any big city in the nation in 2016, the most recent year for which data are available.
