On May 2, Class 12 of Kitchens for Good’s Project Launch program started training. Funded through the San Diego Workforce Partnership as a CalFresh Employment and Training program, the 12-week certified culinary apprenticeship program aimed to increase the employment and earning potential of CalFresh recipients.

Growing up Jesus Jhair Gama describes himself as, “that kid who was called upon whenever there was a technical issue at home.” He enjoyed working with technology and was a self-taught repairman. In his early days of repairs, he immersed himself in information, watching videos and reading as much as possible about the mobile phone industry.

This past school year the San Diego Workforce Partnership (SDWP) formed a unique partnership with the Vista Unified School District (VUSD) to provide meaningful experiences for high school students to help prepare them for the world of work in a new CONNECT2Careers program called C2C on Campus.

Today, the San Diego Workforce Partnership announces that funding awarded to Reimagine Retail San Diego has reached a total of $1.35 million since 2016. Through this effort, the organization works with employers to improve job quality, creates pathways to advancement for retail workers and uncovers opportunities to strengthen the region’s retail economy.

We all hear about the “skills gaps.” Gaps exist for many reasons. In the public workforce system, we are working tirelessly to overcome the disparity and to build skills that lead to great futures. On July 19, President Trump signed an executive order “to prioritize and expand workforce development” with the goal of providing the “millions of men and women who have been on the sidelines the chance to find fulfilling work that lifts up them and their families.”

Wednesday, July 25 was a momentous day for workforce development and the San Diego Workforce Partnership (SDWP) on Capitol Hill. On the same day that SDWP CEO Peter Callstrom testified before the House Education and Workforce Committee, the house approved a reauthorization of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act, which sent the bill to the president’s desk for signature.

The San Diego Workforce Partnership (SDWP) announces the appointment of new members to its Workforce Development Board (WDB). The Workforce Development Board provides oversight and funding direction to SDWP, determining workforce strategy, objectives and priorities based upon regional needs and impact. Members represent all of San Diego County.
