It was a full house at the November San Diego Workforce Investment Board (WIB) where an employer offered a success story and new members were sworn in.
Sandy Slivka, Director of the Southern California Biotechnology Center, opened the meeting by sharing a brief history of the Life Sciences Summer Institute’s 10 years of success and introducing Buster Biofuels CEO Buster Halterman, who hired a summer intern, Michael, through the program.
Halterman shared his experience working with Michael. Michael spent his summer testing and advancing methods for cleaning recycled restaurant oil, not only learning the processes, but also implementing new methodologies to improve them. With a small, tight-knit group like the one at Buster Biofuels, bringing in new ideas and skillsets can have a huge impact on progress, and Halterman emphasized how valuable it was to add a fresh, young mind like Michael’s to the team.
The board welcomed two new members who were sworn in at the meeting:
- Patrick Knighton, Director, San Diego Electrical Training Center
- Steve Beringer, Business Agent for the United Association of Plumbers, Steamfitters, Refrigeration & HVAC Technicians Local Union 230
