While in Washington, D.C. on an annual delegation trip organized by the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, SDWP CEO Peter Callstrom and Vice President Andy Hall met with the Department of Labor (DOL) Deputy Secretary Chris Lu, who visited San Diego workforce initiatives in March of this year. Secretary Lu heard updates on the gig economy, apprenticeships, WIOA implementation in our region, and Reentry Works, the DOL grant Linking to Employment Activities Pre-Release (LEAP) that resulted in new job centers at the East Mesa Reentry Facility and Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility.

A delegation of 130 business executives, elected officials, and community leaders joined the Chamber and CEO Jerry Sanders for the 10th annual mission trip to Washington, D.C. This year, the delegation visited the nation’s capital from September 25–28, 2016.
The goal of the trip was to inform and educate federal officials and legislators about important issues impacting the San Diego region, such as education and workforce, transportation and infrastructure, health care, military and veterans, energy and water reliability, cross-border commerce and more.
Dozens of meetings were held with officials from many federal agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Departments of Labor, Education, State, Defense, and Transportation. Our region’s congressional representatives were also very involved and active with the delegation’s visit.
Callstrom and Hall joined our elected leaders, including City of San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Councilmembers David Alvarez and Mark Kersey, Councilmember-elect Chris Ward, and County Supervisors Ron Roberts, Greg Cox and Dave Roberts in making a strong case for interests in our region.
SDWP is honored to have been a part of this important chamber delegation visit.
