Over 850 people attended the symposium this June in New York, New York; including San Diego Workforce Partnership Business Partnerships Specialist Dimitri Smith, who serves on the San Diego Youth Action Board (YAB), a diverse and resilient group of currently and formerly homeless youth working to end youth homelessness. Here Dimitri shares his perspective and takeaways from the event.

Our world is in desperate need of programs that introduce girls of color to fields and demonstrations they are not typically exposed to. DETOUR (Depositing Empowerment Through Outreach and Urban Redevelopment) sets out to dismantle stereotypes while building girls up with self-confidence and the desire to pursue their passions, regardless of today’s societal boundaries.

Too many LGBTQ young adults lack the most basic education and workplace protections. Safety, fair treatment and freedom to be oneself are not privileges in this country—but basic human and civil rights.

On June 4, Mesa College hosted the 2nd African American Achievement which brought together 500+ students from all over the district. The day was a celebration of African American/Black identity and was emceed by motivational speaker Jordan Harrison.

Startup San Diego brings together local entrepreneurs to strengthen connections, share progress, exchange resources and celebrate the thriving innovation community at San Diego Startup Week. This year’s theme was “We are San Diego” to highlight innovation happening all over the region. With sessions in Tijuana, Mexico, downtown San Diego, Carlsbad and Barrio Logan, our region’s robust and diverse tech scene was showcased on its home turf.

In collaboration with the James Irvine Foundation, the San Diego Workforce Partnership hosted an employer roundtable on May 21 where San Diego service sector businesses—which includes those rooted in customer facing roles (restaurants, hospitality, retail, etc.)—discussed what is working well and what key challenges exist within their realm of workforce development.

Google.org joins Strada Education Network and The James Irvine Foundation to back pioneering workforce development program. Beginning this summer, the program will enable unemployed and underemployed individuals across San Diego County to access training in high-demand fields at no up-front cost through an income share agreement.
