Overlooking the beautiful San Diego skyline on the top floor of the San Diego Central Library, the San Diego Metro Region Career Centers hosted their 2nd Annual Workforce Development Hiring Fair (aka JOB-I-CON) on September 15.
Thirty-four employers recruited for positions ranging from entry level to the experienced. This year’s event attracted 334 job seekers, many of whom were able to speak directly with employers about the positions available. Many who attended represent the diverse communities served by the career centers, such as justice-involved/returning citizens, veterans, people with disabilities, immigrants and refugees.
The event was created to change the perspective and outcomes of attending job fairs. What makes this job fair a success is that participants were able to be interview for a position on the spot or set up an appointment for an interview. Some even walked away with a job.
Erwin Magbanua, Special Events Coordinator at the library, was surprised to see such a large turnout. “The entire parking lot was absolutely packed,” said Magbanua. The library was a partner in the event, providing marketing and logistical support.
New to this year’s event was the résumé table, where job seekers had the opportunity to receive one-on-one recommendations and critiques.
A job-seeking attendee commented, “I enjoyed seeing the available positions and the opportunities to meet with employers face to face. I will be meeting the recruiter for an interview later on this week!”
So far, ten participants from the Hiring Fair have been employed from Ace Parking, Home Depot, U.S. Security, San Ysidro Health Care and Aerotek. One employer stated, “This was the best job fair that I’ve been at. I met so many qualified people and there were a lot of great employers here. I want to thank you for this opportunity.”
Another attendee shared, “It was an amazing experience and it was wonderful to talk to the employers in person rather than having to go online or expecting them to call. The personal interaction is so much better.”
