Maritime Alliance gala: Peter Callstrom

The Maritime Alliance gala: Peter CallstromEach year The Maritime Alliance (TMA) honors a select number of individuals and organizations at the Maritime Gala Dinner & Award Ceremony for their work in the Blue Economy. The San Diego Workforce Partnership was selected to receive the Educational Outreach Award at the 9th annual Maritime Gala Dinner and Award Ceremony on November 8 aboard the Inspiration Hornblower, for its research on the sector.

The Gala Dinner was part of the annual BlueTech Summit & Tech Expo, which took place this year on November 8–9.

TMA Executive Director Greg Murphy and Program Manager Christine Pereira describe the gala as a celebration of all things maritime, including, of course, a cruise during the dinner and reception.

Keynote speaker Craig McLean—Assistant Administrator for Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) and Acting Chief Scientist for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)—gave some interesting insights into the Blue Economy and talked about the need for continued support from the “Triple Helix”—academia, policy and industry. Did you know there is a million of bacteria in a shot of seawater, that only 17 percent of the seafloor is mapped, and that 50 percent of the oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean?

“Once we truly come to understand and know the oceans,” McLean said, “that economic potential is going to be so much wider, so much farther, and so much more enriching and engaging than we can fathom today.”

SDWP President and CEO Peter Callstrom accepted the award on behalf of the organization, whose research team produced a report and poster on the Blue Economy, which were then shared with workforce professionals, elected officials, job seekers, educators and students.

Other award winners include the Port of Seattle/State of Washington, Dentons US LLP, Fugro/Planck Aerosystems, U.S. Department of Commerce, International Trade Administration, Steve Walters of Mission Bay High School, Gnostech, Inc., David R. Ringrose, Ph.D., Catalina Offshore Products and Bryan Bjorndal, President and CEO of Assure Controls, Inc.
