Terry Kurtenbach is the executive director of human resources for the San Diego Convention Center Corporation (SDCC). As part of its executive team, Terry leads personnel programs for all human resources areas, including labor relations, employee training, safety and workers compensation, organizational development and more. Her decades of progressively responsible experience led her to her current leadership position, where she continues to enjoy helping employees identify their strengths and realize their full potential. Here Terry tells us about her passion for workforce development and why it’s important.

Why are you passionate about workforce development?

Workforce development allows individuals to expand their skills and develop what they need to be viable contributors in the workplace. Individuals have the opportunity to learn and grow beyond their perceived limits. These opportunities are a win for individuals as they achieve new skills and build their careers and their confidence grows as well. It’s a win for employers who hire efficient and eager-to-learn employees. An organization gains a motivated, trained employee and contributes to a stronger local economy.

What do you like best about being on the Workforce Development Board?

I am passionate about helping people and have a clear understanding of the varying needs of workers. As a human resources professional with over 25 years of experience, I have been fortunate to help individuals from our community on their career paths. The San Diego Workforce Partnership programs are boundless in their potential to help diverse individuals in our community become prosperous working individuals. I am proud to be a part of a board that approves programs and projects and to participate in committees to continue the success of this beneficial organization.

Why is workforce development important for San Diego County?

In addition to my response to the first question, workforce development is important to San Diego County because it gives members of our community a chance to learn, grow and thrive. This development is particularly important in an expensive city like San Diego. We are giving organizations within our community well-trained individuals to hire who can help the organization move forward. By doing so, we are helping people and companies prosper, which will help our overall community prosper.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

When I am not working I enjoy spending time with my husband, two adult sons and shiba inus. I’m thrilled that we can be out and about again as I enjoy dining out and going to the movies with family and dear friends!
