Kevin Johnson is the training director/CFO for the Electrical Training Institute for San Diego & Imperial Counties, working with electrical industry leaders to deliver the most thorough and relevant education in the industry. He is an instructor with the National Training Institute and serves as treasurer/secretary for the San Diego Apprenticeship Coordinators Association and as chairman for the California Electrical Training Directors Association. He believes that the apprenticeship is the foundation of any trade and the main hub for future leaders and owners in the industry. Here Kevin tells us about his passion for workforce development and why it’s important.
Why are you passionate about workforce development? 
We are all looking for an opportunity at a livable wage to care for ourselves and our families and, if we are lucky, work in a field we are passionate about. Workforce development provides the resources to help individuals identify their passions and strengths and match them with employment opportunities to create a career.
If you had $1M to donate to a workforce development program, what would you want done with it?
I hear too often about individuals graduating high school with little to no direction who are not well informed about career opportunities available to them. It would be great to reach these individuals while they are still in school and give them the opportunity to participate in pre-apprenticeships and internships so they come out of high school with some direction and goals.
What do you like best about being on the Workforce Development Board?
To be able to collaborate with other leaders in the community that share the same passions I have is always a pleasure.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I am blessed with three amazing boys and a wonderful wife. We as a family enjoy rollercoasters, hiking and volunteering.
