All ten sectors experienced year-over job losses from April 2019 to April 2020, with leisure & hospitality outpacing the others (losing 104,400 jobs). Other hard-hit sectors include trade, transportation, and utilities, with a loss of 29,700 jobs and education and health services with a loss of 18,000 jobs.
The manufacturing sector was least impacted by COVID-19 as of April, having lost a relatively small proportion of jobs. Overall, employers in San Diego County have lost 217,500 net nonfarm jobs in the past year.
Please note: Employment data is based on the number of San Diego County residents who report (in an anonymous, random-sample survey) having a job. Industry data is based on a survey of San Diego County businesses, and includes data for people on their payroll. Multiple factors can contribute to a difference between these numbers, including survey margin of error, individuals with multiple jobs, and individuals who live in San Diego County but work elsewhere or vice versa.
