The San Diego Employers Association (SDEA) helps small to mid-size businesses with HR support so both the business and their staff can thrive. SDEA helps its members navigate the complex nuances of employment law and compliance by providing personalized support and access to various HR advice, tools, resources and training services. We spoke with the SDEA’s marketing director, Gabriela Howe to learn about their services to support employers and employees.

Can you tell me more about the programs you offer?

SDEA is a Harassment Prevention Training provider. The California state-mandated training requires businesses with five or more employees to provide Harassment Prevention Training to all workers every two years, one hour of training to staff-level employees and two hours of training for supervisors and managers, within six months of hire or promotion.

We provide the training in English and Spanish to businesses via monthly public webinars. We also offer private webinars and onsite training for those who prefer to train their entire staff simultaneously.

Can you talk about some of our community’s challenges and how you’re working to overcome them?

Recently, many employers have been struggling with employee retention. SDEA’s strategy focuses on employee engagement which improves work culture, reduces turnover, increases productivity, builds better work and customer relationships, and affects profits. High employee engagement turns workers into advocates.

We engage employees by hosting Stay Interviews  to learn specific actions leaders can take to strengthen employee engagement and retention within the organization. We take the information back to the leadership and coach them on utilizing and incorporating the results into their employee engagement strategy.

Why is workforce development important to your organization’s mission?

SDEA understands the importance of employee education. Access to highly skilled and educated workers is crucial for all businesses, regardless of their industry. San Diego benefits from improved quality of education and training programs, and SDEA has them covered. We offer customized training, from leadership and management training, to diversity, equity and inclusion training, conflict management, emotional intelligence and more.

Any partnership highlights you’d like to share?

We partner with our members and community, so we are not just here for you, we are here with you. We make HR easier by instilling confidence that the people side of the business is covered.
