Jose is an intake specialist on our client services team. Jose shares details about a typical day, his proudest professional moment, and how he enjoys spending his time off.
What is a typical day like for you?
As a member of the intake team, my day revolves around guiding customers through our services and connecting them with the right resources in the organization and our community. We provide customer support—via phone and email, as well as assistance with resume creation, job applications, and career advice, along with housing and food resources.
Every day brings a new challenge as I rotate through different career centers, each with its own unique set of demands and surprises. This variety keeps my work exciting and dynamic. I’m fortunate to interact with a diverse group of customers, staff and partners, allowing me to witness both the systemic challenges our customers face and the many inspiring success stories that make my job interesting and rewarding.
What professional moment or project are you most proud of?
One of my proudest achievements was being part of the Metro Career Center modernization project. Before the overhaul, the center felt gloomy and intimidating, resembling the experience of being called to the principal’s office. Now, it’s a vibrant and welcoming space filled with positive energy that I hope benefits both customers and staff.
Beyond that, I cherish the personal victories I’ve experienced with customers. For example, I once worked with a client who felt that her age and past experiences were barriers to employment. I assured her that I was on her side and that she should believe in herself as much as I believed in her. She eventually landed a job, and I like to think I played a part in her success.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I love spending time with my family when I’m off the clock. I have a blast playing video games with my amazing and mischievous five-year-old daughter, Samantha, and we love hitting the park or the beach together. Running is another activity I enjoy, as it feels like meditating while in motion.
I love learning new things as well. I am currently tackling home improvement projects involving plumbing and electrical work—so far, there are no hospital visits to report, which I count as a win! I am curious, so I love reading about things like philosophy, economics, and science.
