Workforce development professionals from across the country joined together to think big. September 3-5, 2013 California Workforce Association (CWA) hosted Meeting of the Minds (MMM), the annual innovation-focused conference that is one of the most heralded events on the workforce calendar in the nation.

“Building the New Workforce” was the theme for the 2013 conference, and was an invitation to reinvent how workforce agencies do business in an environment of explosive changes in employment levels, workforce composition, and talent demands in virtually every industry. The conference explored new trends, innovative concepts and emerging practices in workforce development.

Margie de Ruyter, Senior Director of Workforce Initiatives for the San Diego Workforce Partnership (SDWP) was among many speakers who shared new approaches that can be adapted by other regions, from evidence-based interventions to measuring outcomes. “Meeting of the Minds not only provides the opportunity to learn from others and share best practices, but this conference encourages us to look at our public workforce system in ways that we may not think of and to explore other ideas to expand and re-think job training programs” said de Ruyter.

“Design Group Sessions guided by IDEO and CWA staff were also a highlight of Meeting of the Minds. They introduced new tools for program design and encouraged working with the private sector and across silos to improve our services,” said Tina Ngo, Research Manager for SDWP.
