Members of SDWP’s Adult Programs team participated in Reality Changers’ 2nd Annual Race to College 5K Walk/Run on March 7 in Kearny Mesa. The team showed their support for Reality Changers and the tremendous work that they do through a pre-event fundraiser as well as day-of participation. They welcomed family and friends as they created a stronger bond with their teammates as well as Reality Changers, who shares building space with SDWP. This year’s 5K raised over $8,000, tripling last year’s total.

Reality Changers is a nonprofit organization that transforms the lives of students who face adversity to become first generation college students. It has impacted the lives of hundreds of disadvantaged youth by giving out more scholarship awards than any other single program in San Diego.

“Participating in this event allowed us to be a part of something bigger while giving our work a deeper meaning,” says SDWP Adult Programs Technician Nandi Shabazz. “I believe in order to reduce rates of poverty, homelessness and unemployment you need to start with the youth. Educate them on what life has to offer, empower them to achieve their biggest dreams and instill an unbreakable self-confidence that will allow them to conquer any aspirations they have.”
