SDWP staff members recently returned from the California Workforce Association’s (CWA) 14th Annual Youth Conference. SDWP Manager of Special Projects Cindy Perry joined Karen Belcher, senior apprenticeship consultant/San Diego, Division of Apprenticeship Standards, in leading a workshop on the opportunities apprenticeship training provides at-risk youth. The workshop aimed to guide Workforce Investment Boards in developing productive partnerships that would expand training options.

Apprenticeship training is a blend of classroom and on-the-job training. It is highly beneficial for the apprentice as they begin earning wages from day one. In addition, the business community benefits as employers receive skilled workers who are trained to meet their specific needs.

“Apprenticeship training is branching out from the traditional industries of construction trades into many other occupations,” Perry “This ‘earn and learn’ model of training will most likely grow rapidly throughout the State of California.”

Held January 28-30, 2014 in Anaheim, Calif., the CWA conference brought together more than 400 workforce professionals.
