The San Diego Monthly Employment Report (August to September 2014) shows a decrease in the civilian labor force, civilian employment and civilian unemployment. Highlights from the report include:
- San Diego’s unemployment rate fell 0.3 percent, from 6.2 percent in August to 5.9 percent in September
- Civilian labor force decreased by 11,100
- Civilian employment decreased by 4,600
- Civilian unemployment decreased by 6,500
- 2,800 nonfarm jobs were lost in the region
- The industry with the largest month-over employment loss was Leisure & Hospitality with -5,700 jobs
The California Employment Development Department (EDD) reported a decrease in San Diego’s unemployment rate from 6.2 percent in August 2014 to 5.9 percent in September 2014. This 0.3 percent decrease in the unemployment rate resulted from a decrease of 11,100 workers in the civilian labor force. Civilian employment also decreased by 4,600.
Many industries experienced losses between August and September 2014. The industry with the greatest month-over loss was Leisure & Hospitality, with 5,700 jobs lost.
Professional & Business Services was the only industry to see a significant increase in jobs; it rose by 1,100 from August to September 2014. Manufacturing and Trade, Transportation & Utilities saw minor increases of 600 and 300, respectively.
San Diego County is showing a marked change from last month. The continual decrease in Leisure & Hospitality employment is likely due to the last remnants of seasonal workers that were employed during the summer. Although the August to September 2014 unemployment statistics may be discouraging, it is still important to note that the year-over changes have shown job gains in a majority of the industries from September 2013 to September 2014.
