US Conference of Mayors Workforce Development Council logoThe United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) Workforce Development Council (WDC) hosted its quarterly board meeting in Washington, D.C., on September 19–20, 2016. In addition to the board meeting, the gathering included a leadership institute, a pre-forum session on deciphering the WIOA final regulations, and a congressional forum.

USCM takes the lead in bringing national attention to the challenges and potential of urban America, particularly in areas relating to employment and training and workforce development.

The WDC provides a forum for mayors and workforce leaders to examine workforce development issues and to strengthen the ability of cities to meet the needs of their citizens; particularly economically disadvantaged individuals, those with serious skill deficiencies, dislocated workers, and others with special barriers to employment, including youth.

Peter Callstrom presented on President Obama’s Promise Zone Initiative in the San Diego region and expanding access to opportunity in urban, rural, and tribal communities.

Peter was elected to the board of the WDC in 2013. He, along with 50 other workforce development leaders from around the country convene quarterly to share best practices, ideas, challenges, and solutions. The WDC is a great opportunity to ensure that our region remains on the cutting edge in our workforce efforts.
