Do you know a high school student who is interested in a career in the life sciences? If so, let them know applications are now being accepted for the Life Sciences Summer Institute through March 23.

Now entering its 12th year of connecting high school students with paid internships at local research institutions, the LSSI program offers young people the rare opportunity to gain valuable experience in the life sciences while being paid to learn.

The LSSI program include:

  • Weeklong “boot camp” covering topics like biotechnology laboratory skills, safety practices and soft skills
  • Mentorship by a scientist and exposure to real-life science practices
  • College credit for the bootcamp at Grossmont and Miramar colleges
  • College prep units for their internship through University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Extension
  • Micro-badge credential from UCSD Extension upon internship completion

Created in 2005, LSSI strengthens science and math education in the region and develops a future workforce for the life sciences industry. Each year, more than 300 high school students apply to LSSI for paid summer internship positions with San Diego’s leading life sciences institutions. In the summer of 2015, 36 students participated in internships. Four hundred forty-four students have participated in the program to date.

Businesses and individuals interested in investing in our future workforce can participate in LSSI by donating to the program, hosting teachers, hiring an intern or providing student sponsorships. For more information, contact Erika Aranguré, LSSI project coordinator, at Erika@workforce.org.

LSSI applications for high school students can be completed online and are due March 23, 2016. Click here for more information.
