April 29, 2016

On April 28,  San Diego Grantmakers and San Diego Impact Investors hosted their inaugural Deal Flow event. Deal Flow is part of a goal to activate $100 million in new impact investments in our region by 2025. Impact investing is a chance to blend philanthropy and investing by supporting endeavors that generate positive social or environmental outcomes and financial returns, and it has the potential to exponentially increase the number of people using their capital for good.<--break->” src=”/sites/all/modules/wysiwyg/plugins/break/images/spacer.gif” title=”<--break-->” /><!--break--></p>
<p>Six presenters – 314 Beach Lofts, Bottles & Wood, Cancer Resource Center of the Desert/Survivorwear, CollectiveSun®, Interfaith Community Services and the San Diego Workforce Partnership (SDWP) — made presentations and fielded questions from three panelists — Bhairvee Shavdia, Chris Weil and Peter Zahn — whose effort, experience and expertise helped the audience understand a little more about the impact investment field in San Diego County.</p>
<p>SDWP’s Andy Hall presented about SDWP being a recent <a href=recipient of federal funding through Third Sector Capital Partners, for technical assistance to assess the feasibility of implementing Pay for Performance (P4P) endeavors that improve education, employment and recidivism outcomes for youth in San Diego’s juvenile justice system. As a result, SDWP is exploring program and investment opportunities in these issue areas that could become P4P projects and eligible for repayment with designated state funds through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). Hall noted that future investors can expect up to a 8-15% ROI for projects like these.

The room was filled with a blend of backgrounds and interests that reinforced the notion that “community capital” — not grants and loans and investments, but capital that helps us all reach personal and societal goals — has a bright path forward in San Diego.
