East County career center

Marcia Knabe had a background in corrections, but wanted to do less physically demanding work. She came to the East County Career Center, an America’ Job Center of California (AJCC) site, determined to continue working but in a less physical role.

Marcia heard about the East County career center through the California Employment Development Department (EDD) and attended a Personalized Job Search Assistance (PJSA) workshop, which offers job seekers job search services, labor market information and assists them with entering résumés in CalJOBSSM.

With the help of the career center, Marcia decided to pursue training through the Occupational Skills Center (OSC) in the Bookkeeping and Office Specialist program. She exceled in the online program and breezed through the program, earning excellent grades. She gained a vast knowledge of bookkeeping basics in addition to general office procedures and skills, earning the Vocational Certificate of Completion, and certificates in OSC Computer Training in Bookkeeping and Office Specialist.

Marcia enjoyed the entire experience while training at OSC and was ready for employment soon thereafter.

“The career center really got things rolling,” Marcia shared. “The classes they offered on interviews and résumés were great. The bookkeeping classes got me updated on all the current programs which really helped with the new job. I had a couple of interviews before this process and I felt really unsure of myself. After this program I felt like I was running the show in the interviews. It was great … I got my current job soon after and love it. And I’m still getting calls!”

Marcia uses the skills she gained through OSC in an administrative role at Hudson Safe-T-Lite, a local business that prepares traffic plans and provides necessary devices to route traffic safely through lane closures, detours, street closures or freeway closures.

Marcia highly recommends the programs and services of the East County career center as she received relevant training and support that led directly to employment.
