Last month, CONNECT2Careers students took part in the youth employment program’s work-readiness workshops, which are designed to prepare them for success in the workplace. The students learned tips for résumé writing and interviewing as well as how to present themselves in a professional setting.

The students also had the opportunity to hear from San Diego City Council President Pro Tem Sherri Lightner (District 1) and Councilmember Myrtle Cole (District 4), who each kicked off one of the work-training events. Councilmembers Lightner and Cole each allocated Community Projects, Programs and Services (CPPS) funds from their districts to help support the work-readiness workshops.

An ardent supporter of C2C, Lightner kicked off the first workshop, held at the South Metro Career Center, by sharing stories of her first job—a lifeguard. She then recounted her career path from engineer to business owner to volunteer in public service to politician. Lightner encouraged the students to seek new opportunities and work hard to become our future leaders.

Cole launched the second workshop, also at the South Metro Career Center, with an impassioned speech about dreaming big and believing in oneself. She challenged the students to spread the C2C message and bring their friends to a training.

The third work-readiness workshop was held at Miramar College.

Lightner is now calling on local business owners to work with C2C to provide jobs that will help train the future workforce and close the skills gap. “CONNECT2Careers provides a great way for businesses to give back to the community while helping to train our emerging workforce, which is critical to growing our local economy and competing in the global marketplace,” she says.
