More than 900 San Diego youth have applied to take part in the CONNECT2Careers (C2C) 2014 summer employment program. An initiative of SDWP, C2C prepares our region’s future workforce by providing youth with the education, skills and support necessary to obtain and maintain a job and by connecting them to meaningful paid work experiences.

“The objective of C2C is to look at young adults ages 16-21, their career aspirations, and place them in jobs in our region’s growth industries,” says Diahna Leon, youth director. “The fact that our applications doubled from last year, our inaugural year, tells us that San Diego’s youth want to get to work. Our focus now is to get them ready.”

C2C provides pre-work training sessions for young adults, preparing individuals for success in the workplace. In addition to getting tips for résumé writing and engaging in mock interviews, participants learn how to present themselves in a professional setting. These pre-employment workshops begin June 16, 2014.

The C2C program staff connects these motivated and trained young adults with local employers, who conduct interviews and hire the candidates directly. Leon adds that 55 companies are currently participating in hiring C2C youth. “We would like to double that number,” she says. Businesses that are already employing C2C participants include HDR, Northrup Grumman, Jamba Juice, and Canine Lodge and Spa. Additionally, C2C currently has approximately 300 positions ready to be filled.
