In an effort to increase their ability to provide low-income families and children with a computer that will bring technology to their home for the first time, Computers 2 SD Kids (C2SDK) joined forces with the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, Cox Communications and U-T San Diego to launch the Chamber Computer Challenge. Since its launch on September 30, 2014 more than 75 corporations and small businesses have worked toward achieving a goal of collecting 10,000 computers for San Diego families.

“There is a great disparity in San Diego County with people who do and don’t have connectivity,” says Cami Mattson, Director of Community Relations at Cox. “Kids who don’t have computer and Internet access are at a disadvantage. And by getting computers into people’s homes it will not only help kids with homework, but also allow parents to look for jobs, review medical records and communicate with family members.”

Small, medium and large-size businesses, as well as individuals, are encouraged to respond to the challenge by donating their used computers, pledge a future donation or host a computer collection drive. Donated computers are then refurbished by C2SDK and distributed to families that do not own a computer. C2SDK understands the importance of keeping data confidential and has a strict security program in place to make all businesses feel confident donating.

Computer technology is no longer the wave of the future; it is the present mode of communication, education and workforce development. The C2SDK challenge helps families realize their dreams. Each family receives training, technical support and lifetime replacement should their computer fail. C2SDK’s partnership with Cox provides affordable Internet, ensuring the entire family has the tools to access life’s opportunities for at least the next 10 years.
